YouTube Ban in Turkey, Again

YouTube screenshot

We have seen it before and were waiting for it to happen again so here we are. Turkey just put another ban on YouTube after a user reported that Google’s video sharing web site had some clips that were considered to be insulting to some Turkish political persons. Well, the Turkish government acted promptly and ordered the national telecommunications company to block access to YouTube. That is for all Turkish residents until YouTUbe will delete the “offensive” clips. We did see this before, in March. The ban then lasted 2 days but now we can not really know how much it will last. After the ban was announced, the Reporters Without Borders organization promptly responded and stated that blocking an entire web site just because of some videos is a “disproportionate measure”. I totally agree as this might be a case of denying someone of the freedom of expression here, and maybe even of speech. We would of course need to see the clips to really see what the problem was.
