Electricity from Nature

Biovolt TeamA team of student researchers at MIT created a device that seems to be to good to be true. We are talking about something that can turn into one of the most important discoveries in recent years, something that will change the face of electricity as we see it at the moment. I am talking about a device that can create energy for just $2. It is all based on biomass, was constructed and presented at the inauguration of MIT and Dow Materials Engineering contest held on the 25th of September.

So, 7 students created a device that generates energy from cellulosic biomass. It actually creates enough of it to charge a cell phone, although it will take around 6 month for your mobile phone to be charged. On the other hand, it seems that several units can be linked together to increase power output 100 times and “fuel” needed is everywhere from grass to leaves. So, let us do the math. We have here something that would cost around $200 and would be able to charge a mobile phone in 1.8 hours. This sounds great in theory but more research is needed in order to know if it can actually be done. This device is very similar to what researchers at Oxford did. They also created a bio fueled cell but that one uses platinum, a material that is far more expensive than a leaf. Oh, I almost forgot, the team bared the name Biovolt. Pretty fit, ain’t it?
