This is where Proporta steps in and showcases their “world’s smallest” GPS receiver, called Freedom. So we have a nifty device that also functions as a key fob. It is also a SiRF Star III-equipped GPS receiver that can link to any device that it can with nearby. One charge will make it possible for Freedom to be used for 9 hours and will connect to 20 satellites. GPS technology is currently evolving but they all need one thing: getting data from some location. Magellan comes to the table with a possible answer for this problem with their MobileMapper CX GPS. This is a CX that is both Bluetooth and WiFi enabled and can connect to remote databases, other units and even browse the Internet. At a first look you get the idea that it is a mobile phone but this is just a design choice aimed at making mapmakers and surveyors log data with ease. The CX runs on WinCE 5.0, on open version that according to Magellan is easy to develop for. This device also has expansion properties thanks to a SD memory slot. We do not know the price yet nor any word has been released concerning availability.
A new GPS unit was presented by Navigon at IFA with the promise that it will please drivers that are looking for extra features. The 2100 model works around a 3.5 inch touchscreen and contains a number of mapping units while sharing the slim profile exhibited in the 5100 and the 7100. We have a bunch of extra features that includes Reality View, which shows a 3d mock-up of the road while indicating lane changes and even signs located in the area. With Navigon 2100 traffic data is free. This comes in contrast with other units that charge for this. ZAGAT star ratings can also be used and provides information regarding the best hotels and restaurants in major US cities.
