Google and Yahoo Sued Over Their Name

Well, Google was sued for crimes against humanity. If you thought that lawsuit was strange you should hear about these two. One individual that is detained by the Immigration services in Houston recently filed a lawsuit against both Yahoo and Google. The Reason? Well, he claims that the two highly popular web sites stole their names from Tanzanian tribes. Conveniently enough, this guy is a direct descendant of the two tribes mentioned: Gogo and Yao. Can you see the similarities between Gogo and Google and between Yao and Yahoo? Well, they might have something in common when we put the names on paper but how could such a lawsuit win? This guy is only asking for $10K for every member of these three tribes, going back for three generations! I wonder how much that would get him! In any case, both Google and Yahoo have documents that show where their name come from. It is strange though that such stupid lawsuits, including the one with crimes against humanity, would get to trial. Companies need to spend money, not much but still money, in order to fight off lawsuits coming from detainees. On the other hand this piece of news marks a first: it is the first time as far as I remember that Google and Yahoo are both attacked at the same time and they need to protect themselves together. Kind of funny!

No More PS3 to Download PSP Games in Japan

PSP

The PlayStation Store makes it possible for gamers to connect to the PlayStation 3 console with their PSP in order to download some classic PlayStation One games to play on their handheld. This brings a small problem as those individuals that do not own a PS3 can not access the feature. Well, this changed, in Japan at least. Sony recently announced that the PlayStation Store is now accessible to PC users connected to the Internet. Unfortunately, this feature will only be available in Japan so not much of a good news here. The company is struggling and this seems like a good move, if it were to be available around the world and not in Japan only.

YouTube Ban in Turkey, Again

YouTube screenshot

We have seen it before and were waiting for it to happen again so here we are. Turkey just put another ban on YouTube after a user reported that Google’s video sharing web site had some clips that were considered to be insulting to some Turkish political persons. Well, the Turkish government acted promptly and ordered the national telecommunications company to block access to YouTube. That is for all Turkish residents until YouTUbe will delete the “offensive” clips. We did see this before, in March. The ban then lasted 2 days but now we can not really know how much it will last. After the ban was announced, the Reporters Without Borders organization promptly responded and stated that blocking an entire web site just because of some videos is a “disproportionate measure”. I totally agree as this might be a case of denying someone of the freedom of expression here, and maybe even of speech. We would of course need to see the clips to really see what the problem was.

Gmail 2.0 to be Released

Gmail logoThere has been much stipulation as to the future development of Google Mail, especially after Yahoo hit it hard with the no storage limit feature. Now Gmail needs to come with something to top that and offering the same thing would probably viewed as a copy of Yahoo so I do not really think this would happen. On the other hand there are reports of two new features that are to appear. So, we have Google Gears and View Account Activity. We did not properly understand what is the deal with Google Gears but the View Account Activity feature can be useful. It will show all the IPs connected to your Gmail account and those of the past. This way you can be sure that nobody is using your e-mail unless they are allowed. Nobody really knows when Gmail 2.0 will be launched or how it will look and what will showcase. It does seem that existing features are also upgraded so we can probably expect a good experience. I sure hope so as Gmail is my favorite e-mail client.

Google Sued For Crimes Against Humanity

Google LawsuitThere are a lot of strange lawsuits in USA. We recently saw one senator that started a lawsuit against GOD and now we see that Google is being sued for crimes against humanity. Dylan Stephen Jayne from Pennsylvania is the one that started this and he asks for just $5 million in damages. The charge is even more bizarre as the reason stays in the fact that his social security number, if it is turned upside down and scrambled spells “GOOGLE”.

If you click on the thumb you will see a handwritten real lawsuit! Strange things happen in America!

World Record for Longest Phone Call Broken

Tony WrightTony Wright is an individual that does not stand out in the crowd but now he became famous. The reason? Breaking the world record for the longest phone call ever, with 40 hours and still going. Just in case you care, the previous record was of 39 hours, 18 minutes and 24 seconds, set on November 3 2005. Well, Tony Wright broke the record while talking to Jenny Barnard. It is interesting that people, as soon as they found out, took chat slots with Wright in order to help him beat the record. The good news is that the phone call is made by using Tesco Internet phones, making the call almost free. Way to go Tony!

Yahoo Mash in Beta Tests

Yahoo Screenshot

Yahoo just started putting Mash, their social networking web site that allows Yahoo users to share pieces of information with each other, in beta tests. The fail of Yahoo 360 did not stop the company and now they have another attempt at entering the social networking business. They even tried purchasing Facebbook, but that failed as well. Nothing is really known about Yahoo Mash but one thing is announced and seems very strange to us: Yahoo users will be able to edit profiles that belong to their friends. Does that mean that I can say in his profile that “Billy is a lazy guy that does not have a social life so avoid him” with ease? This just does not seem right. A number of beta testers were invited to start off things and see how Yahoo Mash works, looks and feels. As expected, there is an almost complete lack of many features that a regular social network system has like private messaging or posting personal information. We will have to see how this develops!
